The stone burst with a mighty blast and there emerged two dragons, one white and one red. They leaped to fiercely attack each other, fighting bitterly, breathing out fire as they panted. King Vortigern asked Merlin to explain what the battle meant. Merlin burst into tears and went into a prophetic trance. He explained that the Red Dragon symbolised Britain and the White Dragon the Saxon Invaders and that after a while the White will overcome the Red and Britain's mountains and valleys shall be levelled and its streams shall flow with blood. He also warns Vortigern of his forthcoming death and prophesies the coming of Arthur "The Boar of Cornwall" which bring relief from the invaders.
