Sir Mordred infected the court of Camelot with the notion that Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot were betraying the King in a secret love affair. Mordred confronted the King and offered to catch the lovers in a tryst. King Arthur reluctantly agreed and prayed that the lovers would not get caught. Mordred finally got the proof he needed by finding Lancelot in Guinevere's chamber, and the Queen was condemned to death by burning. King Arthur had one last hope, for he was certain that Lancelot would never allow the Queen to suffer such a fate. Indeed on the appointed day Lancelot swept all aside and rescued Guinevere from the pyre. In the ensuing battle two of Sir Gawains young brothers were killed by Lancelot. This divided the loyalties of the round table even further and Camelot erupted into civil war. Lancelot and his allies retreated to the safety of his castle Joyous Garde.
